This is the portrait of Jadwiga Karlowicz, wearing a typical white cotton highlander blouse with decorations. She's sitting folding her arms on a chair, and looking to her right. She's got a neatly tied bun and dark hair. Michal Maksymilian Rekucki graduated from the Nowy Sacz gymnasium and served for a year in the ranks of the Austrian army. He began his studies in 1906 at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Lviv University of Technology, which he interrupted after a year and left for Krakow, where he became a student of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University. He also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow in the studios of Józef Mehoffer and Wojciech Weiss. In 1912 he began his travels around Europe, after which he came back to Krakow and served in the Austrian army, got into Russian captivity and was deported to Siberia. After 7-years sentence, Rekucki moved to the United States in 1924, living first in Chicago and then Pennsylvania. He earned his living by painting portraits and was one of the founders of the Polish-American Tatra Society and then Podhale Association. After returning to Chicago in 1939, he painted portraits of Wladyslaw Sikorski and Ignacy Jan Paderewski. In 1959 he decided to return to Poland, settled in Krakow and lived there until his death. Michal Rekucki's work includes portraits, landscapes and genre scenes. A large part of the paintings is connected with Podhale, the life of highlanders. On a much smaller scale, the artist was engaged in sculpting. |
