This Polish tapestry, or a kilim*, illustrates bright-colored, orange abstract theme with depictions of four deer. There is a label on the back of the tapestry that reads: "Symbol - W-023/88 Symbol of production: 00170 Kind of kilim - Kilim 'B'III Name of Kilim - 88'Sarenki' Designer's name: Woleka Weaver's name: Pazdur Size: 0,80 x 1,00 m 0.80m2 Weight: 1.30 kg hand made Made in Poland." *A kilim is a flat tapestry-woven reversible carpet or rug, traditionally produced in the countries of the former Persian Empire, that could be purely decorative or can function as prayer rugs. Kilims are specific fabrics - they are flat and rather stiff, extremely durable, beautiful and extremely practical. Kilims usually have a highly geometric design. They can serve as both a carpet and a wall decoration - so the fabric can be effectively displayed both on the floor and on the wall. Cepelia is a household name in Poland. It's the phonetic abbreviation of 'Centrala Przemyslu Ludowego i Artystycznego' (literally: Headquarters of the Folk and Artistic Industry). Cepelia was established in June 1949 as a central manufactory of folk art. By the end of the 1950s it consisted of over 200 independent artisans of folk art, 105 association of artists, and over 60 stores throughout the country. According to culture.pl "Cepelia was established by decree of the Economic Committee of the Council of Ministers. It quickly bloomed and proliferated. Special sections were organised in all of the larger cities across Poland, with new work-centres created where employees underwent special training. All other related co-operatives in the folk and artistic industry were gradually subsumed by Cepelia (including the re-activated Lad). Thousands of people found work in the production units of this new institution, while the number of its craftsmen was estimated to be around 200,000." |
